This movie is based on the true story of the incident at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany when terrorists take a group of Israeli athletes and coaches hostage. This gives you a look into how the ABC crew covering the Olympics reported the hostage situation.
It’s a great movie with a great cast including Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch. I am sure that parts of it is dramatized for movie purposes, but it was still thrilling and a bit of an eye opener to what happened back then. I watched this movie with friends, and afterwards, we were saying to each other, “I only knew a bit of that, didn’t know ALL that happened!”
There were also some interesting little things shown about how they did things back then- as this was all before the majority of the modern technology we have these days. Like for example creating the words and logo template for what is shown on the screen had to be done manually with a board, and a camera aimed at it. Communicating by walkie talkies because there were no cellphones back then (ok this mode of communication still happens today, but I mean, like that was the only way back then).
There is another movie about this incident called Munich, a 2005 film with Eric Bana, that focuses on what happened after the incident, where the Israeli government seeks revenge- I have not seen this movie yet, but I want to.
September 5 is a great movie if you like historical film, and want to learn more about what happened back then. Check it out!
