This book by Bryan Reardon, is excellent. It’s told in the first person by a father by the name of Simon, who one day learns there’s been a shooting at his kids’ high school. As he races to the school, it is not long before he finds out that his daughter has been reunited with her mother (his wife) and is safe, but there’s no word on his son, Jake.
The book alternates between his flashbacks to memories of Jake growing up, and the agonizing process of trying to find his son and what happened. The book had me hooked from start to finish. It was well written and kept you emotionally connected to the characters in the story. You’re impatiently waiting along with the father, trying to find out what happened.
Even though this is a fictional story, I feel like it gives you a bit of an idea of what people directly impacted by a school shooting goes through during, and after. And the ripple effects that it can have on people and the community. If this book sounds interesting to you, give it a read!
