Beware, the following has a bit of some spoilers. Please don’t read if you plan on reading the book and don’t want spoilers.

This excellent historical fiction book by Kristin Hannah stars a nursing student, Frances McGrath, known as “Frankie”, who impulsively signs up to be a nurse overseas during the Vietnam war after her brother gets shipped overseas and she worried about him. Unfortunately, before she ships out, the family gets the devastating news that her brother has been killed in action. Even though her parents didn’t support her decision (her father did not believe women belongs in the military, and her mother worried for her safety), Frankie goes overseas anyway.

The book chronicles the highs (very few), and the lows (more often than not), of her experiences as nurse in a war zone, and her bond with her fellow nurse friends, and it also follows her as she struggles to adapt with civilian life back home after her service ended, in a world that believes military nurses do not see “combat”.

I was recommended this book by a friend, and I very much enjoyed reading it. Its an excellent book!
