This is a new documentary series that recently released on Netflix. Most of us know that there are positives as well as negatives to the internet and social media. This show focuses on one specific group of kids- Piper Rockelle, and her group of friends, known as “The Squad” and Piper’s mother Tiffany Smith who managed their videos.
This documentary is filled with interviews with former squad members, and their parents who make allegations against Smith- alleging everything from harassment, harsh work conditions, no compensation, and even sexual harassment claims. These kids are among a group of 11 kids and parents who filed a lawsuit against Smith and Hunter Hall (the cameraman and Smith’s significant other).
It’s also filled with video clips of videos they made, and some behind the scenes clips of what occurred while making these videos. There are clearly some proof of uncomfortable moments that were occurring. It’s hard to watch kids possibly being used for gain by a parent through inappropriate means. In my own personal view, I believe these former members and their parents have some truth to their claims. However, I should also note that Tiffany Smith and her daughter Piper have denied the allegations and claims that these people are motivated by money.
In any case, it does shed some light on the industry and is a difficult reminder that these type of videos and social media content are not appropriately regulated for the safety of all involved. There is aways to go improve that.
