This is another true story movie I watched this past weekend. It stars Kate Winslet, and it tells the story of Lee Miller, a former American fashion model turned famous photographer working for Vogue magazine in London in the 1940s during World War II. Or rather I should say it tells the story of a certain point in her life, not her whole life. Just that time period in the 1940s where she successfully got Vogue magazine to send her into the war zone as a war photographer/correspondent.
It also stars Andy Samberg as David “Davy” Scherman, a fellow war photographer who traveled with her through the war zone. It’s not surprising to see Winslet knock it out of the park as a serious character in a film or show. She performed superbly in this, but Samberg, on the other hand is a comedian who you are more likely to see in comedy stuff. I am not sure I have ever seen him in a serious role (not that I remember anyway), so it was great to see him expand his acting chops, because he was also great in this.
World War II was a serious and horrific event in our history, and this movie covers some of the horrors of that time, and it is a bit hard to watch in some moments. It’s not overly graphic by any means, but it might be disturbing for some to watch, so I caution you about that. But it is a very well-done movie, and I am glad I watched it.
