Apple TV was free this weekend for anyone with an Apple ID, so I finally had a chance to check out this new limited series from last year. It is based off a 1987 book by Scott Turow by the same name. It had also been adapted in a 1990 movie, again, by the same name, with Harrison Ford as the main character, Rusty Sabich, the Chief Deputy Prosecutor in the District Attorney’s office in Chicago.

I had read the book earlier last year, and I also watched the movie last year as well, but I didn’t have an apple tv subscription when this new show came out. In this show, Sabich is played by Jake Gyllenhaal. And the show is nearly a completely new take on the story.

The premise in all 3 versions is the same- Carolyn Polhemus, a fellow prosecutor in the DA’s office is murdered, and Sabich, with whom she had been having an affair becomes the prime suspect. The 1990 movie more closely aligns with the book, but the show does not. Most of the characters are the same, but it has new characters as well, and things happen in the show that don’t happen in the book, and vice versa.

I mostly liked the new take, especially because it allowed me an opportunity to guess and try to figure things out instead of already knowing what happens. But there are also certain things that happen in the book that I would have liked to see happen in the show but didn’t. But I overall liked the show. If you’ve read the book or seen the movie and liked it, you probably would enjoy this. If you like crime stories, courtroom drama and mysteries, you probably would enjoy it. So, check it out if you get a chance!
