As Adam Sandler movies goes, this was one of his better ones. The movie takes place in Hawaii, where Harry Roth (Sandler), a marine Veterinarian who is afraid of commitment, has a run in with a beautiful woman, Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore), and he decides to pursue her. The problem: She suffered a car accident previously, and has memory problems, where after she goes to sleep, she wakes up the next day completely forgetting the previous day.
In an attempt to keep things calm for Lucy, her family and the town have rallied together to pretend that it is the same day (the last day that she remembers from before the accident), over and over. So, while Harry is trying to pursue her, as she forgets him every day, everybody is trying to stop him.
This movie is loosely based on the true story of Michelle Philpots- an England resident who suffered two traumatic accidents (in 1985 and 1990). She eventually lost the ability to form any new memories and wakes up every day thinking it is 1994. 50 First Dates is a heartwarming and comedic version of such an experience.
If you are familiar with Adam Sandler movies, you know some of his movies are more of gross slapstick comedy that serves no real purpose- this movie is a nice deviation from that, that I think most people can enjoy. There is also a great supporting cast, including Sean Astin as Lucy’s brother Doug, Dan Aykroyd as Dr. Keats, her doctor, Blake Clark as her father Marlin, Amy Hill as her waitress friend, Sue. Rob Schenider, who almost always costars in Sandler’s movies and vice cersa, is also in this movie as Harry’s weird best friend, Ula.
