This is a new spinoff series of a 2007 Disney Channel show called Wizards of Waverly place that ran for 4 seasons. The original show was about a family of wizards- well half of the Russo family were wizards: Jerry (the father), Justin (the eldest son), and Alex (the middle child/daughter). Theresa (the mother), and Max (the youngest child/son) are not. In that show, Jerry was teaching Justin and Alex to be wizards- Justin was the prodigal child who was good and smart- and Alex was the troublemaker who was always causing chaos.
In this new spinoff, Justin Russo (David Henrie) is now a retired wizard professor turned assistant principal at a local school. He is also husband to Giada, and father to two sons, Milo and Roman. His family knows nothing about his Wizard past, so he panics when his sister, Alex (Selena Gomez) appears with a wizard child (not her own), Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown. Alex begs Justin to teach Billie the wizard ways. He reluctantly agrees, and of course chaos ensues because Billie is a troublemaker just like Alex was.
This show obviously is geared more towards kids, which I am not anymore, but I wanted to watch this show, partly out of nostalgia for the original show, and curiosity on what became of the Russo family- and I had hoped for some cameos of the original cast- which there are a few, but not many.
This show is a bit silly to me–as an adult viewer, that is. But I can see how kids would enjoy this show- especially if they have had a chance to watch the original series on Disney+. Maybe even if they haven’t seen the original either. But being completely honest, I’m not against silly shows- I watch them all the time. Especially at night before I wind down for the night for some reading. It gives you a nice break from more dark shows or movies. After all, we want to feel happy when we go to sleep don’t we? haha. So, to sum it up, I say this show…is not bad- not as good as the original, but I’ve said this before, right? Nothing usually is as good as the original. This show is- watchable- to me anyway!
