Does the author’s name above in the screenshot look familiar? It should! James Comey is the former Director of the FBI during the Obama and Trump Administrations. I enjoy crime thrillers, and considering his background, I decided to give this book a try.
The plot: a canoe is found in the Saugatuck River in Connecticut, with a dead body. The body is soon linked to a major hedge fund, Saugatuck Associates, where the victim worked. Soon thereafter, Nora Carleton, who has been the company’s lead counsel since she left the US Attorney’s Office two years earlier, starts to investigate whether the murder is connected to the company in any way. It is not long before she realizes she is the lead suspect, and she enlists two friends, Benny Dugan, an investigator with the US Attorney’s office, and Carmen Garcia, an attorney to both, defend her, and investigate the case. Secrets and multiple suspects emerge, all leading to a surprise conclusion!
I enjoyed the book for multiple reasons- it was a good story, characters were interesting and well developed, and it was peppered with well-defined law enforcement and legal things that someone with law enforcement or law would know well. The working relationship between Nora and Benny were excellent, and I hope Comey write more novels with these characters, but I guess time will tell!
