This movie is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (played by Robert Redford in the movie), a career criminal who’s been in and out of jail since he was a teenager. He also successfully escaped jail/prison between 16 and 18 times in his life. The movie focuses on a string of bank robberies he and two other men committed in the fall of 1981. They were knowns as the “Over the Hill gang” as they were all in their 60’s at the time.

The movie also stars Casey Affleck as disillusioned police detective John Hunt, who regains a sense of purpose as he starts investigating these robberies. It also stars Sissy Spacek as Jewel, the woman he began seeing during the time of these robberies- this love story also becomes a side story in the movie. Danny Glover also has a role in the movie as Teddy Green, one of the other men in the “gang”.

I had been wanting to see this movie for a while, as it was a Robert Redford movie, and his movies are excellent- the ones I’ve seen anyway. I finally recently had a chance to watch it, and in my opinion, it doesn’t disappoint. It doesn’t make you dizzy with too much action and too little character development. The movie moves at a steady pace, with a bit of action here and there. It shows you all the different important pieces of what was happening at that time.

If there was anything negative to say about the movie, it would be just this- it humanizes Forrest Tucker a bit- it makes him seem like not such a bad guy. And he may or may not be, but he had been a man who committed crimes- lot of crimes. So, I’m a bit conflicted- should I or should I not be liking this movie? I don’t know. Maybe you should watch it, and tell me?
