David Baldacci is one of my favorite authors, and I have read almost every single one of his books, Memory Man is his first book in the Amos Decker series. Decker is a guy who was a former NFL football player who had a head injury from a helmet-to-helmet collision during his very first game, that left him with a permanent side effect- he can never forget anything.
Years later, after he becomes a police detective, he suffers a tragedy when an unknown assailant breaks into his home when he was not home, and murders his wife, young daughter and brother-in-law. He goes into a spiral and ends up leaving the police force and getting by with an occasional job as a private investigator.
And this is where the story begins- There is a school shooting, and his former police department reaches out to him and asks him to come back on a temporary basis and help investigate the case. And it’s a fun and unique book to read- have you ever read a murder mystery book where the detective has an incredible tool on hand, his memory- every single detail all contained in the mind? It’s pretty neat- it could be days or weeks later in a case, and he would recall a specific thing he saw, or a specific thing someone said from days or weeks earlier. Give this book, and the rest of the Amos Decker series a read!
