If you like shows about history and military stuff- this could be a show for you. It is an apple tv miniseries based on a 2007 nonfiction book by the same name, written by Donald L. Miller. It stars some people you might know such as Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, and Anthony Boyle.
The show tells the true story of aviation battles during WWII, by the 100th Bomber Group. Each episode is more or less a different air mission. The episodes are cinematic, and gritty. You also get a glimpse at stuff that happen to the crew when they are not on the missions. I am sure that the show takes some dramatic license to some things to make them more interesting and exciting for tv. But the characters that these actors play are real people, and these missions are real historical events, even if some details may or may not be true.
One of the things that I liked about the show is that most, if not all the episodes are narrated with a voice over by Lt. Harry Crosby (played by Boyle), who was a navigator on some of these flights. I don’t know why, but when a movie or a tv show has someone narrating it, it is an aspect that I really like. Just like when stories that goes back in time, like the movie Simon Birch for example- the movie starts with a scene in the present with Jim Carrey, and then the rest of the movie is his flashback to when he was a kid in a small town where everybody knows everybody. (Maybe I’ll post about that movie sometime!)
But back to this Masters of the Air show- it has Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks as executive producers, so you know before you even see it that its likely going to be good. And it is! I was actually going to end my apple tv subscription temporarily to switch to a different streaming service, but then this show came out- and I just had to stay with apple tv for a bit longer (they released episodes weekly as they do for most of their shows- which is a nice strategy by apple tv to keep consumers), just so I could watch this show in its entirety.
You already know what I’m going to say here. Give it a watch if you haven’t!
